Fay Forrester and her volatile partner Vince rob a courier carrying mob money, but Fay takes off with the cash and leaves Vince behind. Wanting to disappear for good, she approaches Jack Andrews, a private investigator, and asks him to make it look as though she has died. Jack goes along with the plan, and Fay then vanishes without settling her debt. He sets out after her and discovers that other parties, including Vince, are also searching for her.
The film was directed by John Dahl, who wrote the screenplay with David W. Warfield. It was Dahl's first feature, arriving several years before Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, the later crime films with which his name is most associated. Val Kilmer plays Jack, Joanne Whalley plays Fay, and Michael Madsen plays Vince, with Jon Gries, Michael Greene and Bibi Besch in supporting roles. The production, made by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Propaganda Films, had a budget of about 4 million dollars.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 6,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 out of 10 from around 140 votes. Both audiences land in similar territory, placing the film as a modestly regarded example of late-1980s crime cinema rather than a breakout hit. It runs 94 minutes.
