The Old Dark House

Five travelers caught in a relentless storm in a remote part of Wales take shelter in an old mansion, where they encounter the strange household that lives there. What begins as a refuge from the weather turns into something more unsettling as the night goes on. The film is a horror thriller with darkly comic touches, drawn from J. B. Priestley's novel Benighted, and it brought together a cast that includes Boris Karloff, Charles Laughton and Melvyn Douglas. James Whale directed, with Benn W. Levy writing the screenplay and Carl Laemmle Jr. producing for Universal Pictures. It followed Whale's Frankenstein and preceded The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein and The Man in the Iron Mask among the director's features.

The film runs seventy minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 310 votes. A critics' rating of 8.3 out of 10 from 30 reviews places it above both audience scores.
