Harriet Frankovitz is a ten-year-old girl with a vivid imagination, living in her mother's motel in a small New Hampshire town with her older sister Gwen. She dreams of escaping her inattentive family and the dead-end life around her. When Ricky Schroth, a man with a mental disability, arrives at the motel with his mother, Harriet finds in him a kindness and companionship she has never known. The two outsiders form a close bond, and when tragedy strikes, they come to depend on each other even more.
Digging to China was released in 1997 and marked the directorial debut of actor Timothy Hutton. The screenplay is by Karen Janszen, and the film was produced by J. Todd Harris, John Davis and Marilyn Vance. Evan Rachel Wood, then a child, plays Harriet, with Kevin Bacon as Ricky. Mary Stuart Masterson appears as Gwen, Marian Seldes as Leah Schroth and Cathy Moriarty as Mrs. Frankovitz.
The drama runs 98 minutes and was made in the United States. It has drawn modest audiences: on IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 3,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 out of 10 from a much smaller group of 63 voters, a difference that mostly reflects how few people have rated it there.
