Heaven & Earth

Heaven & Earth follows Le Ly, a young Vietnamese woman whose life is upended by the Vietnam War. Caught between the opposing sides in her own country, she endures torture and imprisonment before fleeing to Saigon, where she works in a wealthy household and has a child. She later marries Steve Butler, an American sergeant, and moves with him to the United States, but the trauma of the war follows them both.

Oliver Stone directed the film from his own screenplay, the ninth of the twenty-two features he has directed, coming after The Doors and before Natural Born Killers. Hiep Thi Le plays Le Ly, with Tommy Lee Jones as Steve Butler, Joan Chen and Haing S. Ngor as her parents, and Debbie Reynolds and Conchata Ferrell in supporting roles. It was produced by Arnon Milchan, Stone and A. Kitman Ho, and was made for about 33 million dollars.

Released in December 1993, the film earned roughly 6 million dollars worldwide, well below its budget. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from twenty-one reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 296 votes.
