Libeled Lady

Libeled Lady is a 1936 comedy about a newspaper that prints a false story accusing a wealthy heiress, Connie Allenbury, of breaking up a marriage. When she sues the paper for a large sum, its chief editor, Warren Haggerty, has to find a way out of the mess. He enlists his former employee Bill Chandler, a well-known sports fisherman with a way with women, to get close to Connie and engineer a compromising situation that would make the original story look true. Haggerty's fiancee Gladys becomes part of the plan as well, and the scheme produces results no one involved expected.

Jack Conway directed the film, which sits between Hell Below and Boom Town in his filmography. The screenplay was written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, Howard Emmett Rogers and George Oppenheimer, and Lawrence Weingarten produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Jean Harlow plays Gladys, William Powell plays Bill Chandler, Myrna Loy plays Connie Allenbury and Spencer Tracy plays Haggerty, with Walter Connolly and Charley Grapewin in supporting roles, among 72 credited cast members.
