Another Country

Another Country is a British drama set largely in a boys' boarding school in the early 1930s. Guy Bennett, a student from a privileged background, is in line to join the school's ruling elite, a group whose members can expect doors to open for them later in life. His affair with a younger pupil, Harcourt, puts that prospect at risk, since the school tolerates such relationships only within strict limits. Guy's friend Tommy Judd, who rejects the school's values and holds Marxist views, stands apart from the same establishment. The film moves between this world and Moscow in 1983, where an American journalist interviews the older Guy, now a man who spied for the Soviet Union, and he looks back on the school year that shaped his later life. The screenplay is by Julian Mitchell.

Marek Kanievska directed, in the first of the two features listed for him, following it with Less Than Zero in 1987. Rupert Everett plays Guy Bennett and Colin Firth plays Tommy Judd, with Cary Elwes as Harcourt and Michael Jenn, Robert Addie and Rupert Wainwright among the supporting cast. Alan Marshall produced the film, which runs 87 minutes.
