Short description
Kate Soffel is married to a prison warden in Pittsburgh, and is the mother of their four children. Ed Biddle is a convicted murderer awaiting execution on death row with his brother Jack. When Kate meets Eddie through her Bible readings to the prisoners, she is drawn to him, and they pursue a clandestine relationship. She agrees to help the brothers escape, and begins a treacherous journey with them to freedom in Canada.
What's left behind the scenes
- Based on a true story.
- The film was shot on a very old bridge in Elora, Ontario, Canada, which had long been closed and was refurbished specifically for the filming. Now it serves as a pedestrian bridge.
- The Allegheny County Jail featured in the film ceased to operate as a penal institution in 1995. It now houses offices of the county court system. The building is on the official list of US landmarks.
- Ken Wahl was on his way to meet Diane Keaton to discuss the role of Ed when he was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained a head injury (which required stitches). Mel Gibson played the role of Ed.
