Eve Peabody, an American showgirl, arrives in Paris with no money after losing what she had at the tables in Monte Carlo. At the station she meets Tibor Czerny, a Hungarian taxi driver who takes an interest in her, and though she is drawn to him she slips away rather than let the acquaintance become serious. She talks her way into a high-society party by passing herself off as a Hungarian baroness, and there catches the attention of Georges Flamarion, a wealthy man who sees through the pose and decides to use it. Georges wants to pry his wife Helene away from her admirer Jacques Picot, and the invented baroness is the means. Eve agrees to the arrangement, while Tibor, set on finding her, presses his fellow drivers into the search.

Mitchell Leisen directed, working from a screenplay by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder, with Arthur Hornblow Jr. producing for Paramount. It was among Leisen's earlier features, preceding Remember the Night, Kitty and Dream Girl. Claudette Colbert plays Eve, Don Ameche is Tibor, John Barrymore is Georges, and Mary Astor, Francis Lederer and Elaine Barrie round out the cast of fifty-four players. The film runs 94 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 14 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 7.4/10 from 96 votes, which places the two measures fairly close together. Both point to a comedy that has held its standing with viewers and reviewers alike.
