Marci Feld is a wealthy young Jewish-American woman with little interest in music or business, until a controversy erupts over a provocative album released by Dr. S, a rapper on her father's hard-core hip-hop label. When protests against the record and the company put her father in the hospital with a heart attack, Marci takes charge of the family business and sets out to soften the rapper's unruly public image. Her efforts bring her into close contact with the star, whose life and world are far removed from her own.
Richard Benjamin directed the comedy, the twelfth film in his directing career following work such as My Favorite Year, The Money Pit and Mermaids. Paul Rudnick wrote the screenplay, and Scott Rudin produced. Lisa Kudrow plays Marci opposite Damon Wayans as Dr. S, with Richard Benjamin as her father, Ben Feld, alongside Jane Krakowski, Christine Baranski and Paula Garcés.
Produced by Paramount and Scott Rudin Productions, the film was released in August 2003 and runs 84 minutes. Against a budget of about 20 million dollars, it took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 5,600 votes and 3.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample, while a critics' score of 3.6 out of 10 from 61 reviews sits close to the audience ratings.
