The Hollars

The Hollars is a comedy-drama about John Hollar, a struggling artist living in New York with his girlfriend Rebecca, who is eight months pregnant. When his mother Sally is hospitalised and scheduled for brain surgery, John brings Rebecca back to the small Midwestern town he grew up in. The visit forces him to deal with the dysfunctional family and old acquaintances he left behind, including his brother Ron, his father Don and his former girlfriend, while his own confidence in his work has collapsed.

John Krasinski directed the film and plays John, heading a cast that includes Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Anna Kendrick and Charlie Day. Jim Strouse wrote the screenplay, and Krasinski produced with Ben Nearn and Tom Rice. It runs 88 minutes and was the first feature Krasinski directed, preceding A Quiet Place, its sequel, IF and a further A Quiet Place instalment.

Released in August 2016, the film had a budget of 4 million USD and took about 1 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 16,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.3/10 from roughly 338 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 89 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores on both sites.
