Ziegfeld Girl

Ziegfeld Girl follows three women whose lives change when they are hired for a Broadway revue. Susan, a singer, worries about the effect her success will have on her father, an aging vaudeville performer. Sheila, a young woman from a working-class neighborhood, is torn between her loyal boyfriend and the attentions of a wealthy older man. Sandra, a European newly arrived in New York, is married to a concert violinist who cannot accept her earning a living by displaying herself on stage. The three become part of the Ziegfeld spectacle, and their paths diverge as the demands of fame press on their private lives. One of them is unable to cope with success.

The film was directed by Busby Berkeley and Robert Z. Leonard for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, from a screenplay by Sonya Levien and Marguerite Roberts, with Pandro S. Berman producing. It came late in Berkeley's directing career, after Gold Diggers of 1933 and Footlight Parade, and late in Leonard's as well, following The Divorcee, Susan Lenox, The Great Ziegfeld and Pride and Prejudice. Judy Garland, Hedy Lamarr and Lana Turner play the three leads, with James Stewart, Tony Martin and Jackie Cooper among a credited cast of 92.
