Short description
Carol White is a well-off Los Angeles housewife in the late 1980s whose comfortable routine of aerobics, shopping, and time with her husband and son is disrupted when she begins suffering from headaches, fatigue, and breathing problems. Her health keeps deteriorating, but doctors can find nothing wrong with her. The film follows her as her condition, eventually described as an allergy to the modern environment, isolates her from her family and her former life, and as she turns to a New Age treatment center in New Mexico for help.
Safe was released in 1995 and runs 119 minutes. Todd Haynes directed and wrote the screenplay, following his 1991 debut Poison. Producer Christine Vachon and executive producer Lauren Zalaznick worked alongside him, and the cast is led by Julianne Moore as Carol, with Xander Berkeley as her husband Greg, Peter Friedman as Peter Dunning, and James Le Gros as Chris. The production, a British-American drama, was made for about 1 million dollars.
