Set in Vienna on Christmas Eve, this drama weaves together the lives of several city residents whose paths cross by chance. Across a series of short scenes, the everyday routines of these unrelated people gradually build toward a single act of violence: a nineteen-year-old student opens fire in a bank and on the street, killing strangers before taking his own life. The film presents this event not as an isolated shock but as the culmination of separate, ordinary stories that briefly intersect.
Michael Haneke wrote and directed the film, which followed Benny's Video and stands as the fourth of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, with Funny Games arriving two years later. Otto Grünmandl, Udo Samel, Anne Bennent, Lukas Miko and Gabriel Cosmin Urdes are among the cast. Producers Veit Heiduschka and Willi Segler oversaw a German-Austrian production running 100 minutes.
The film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 on TMDB from 214 votes, while a smaller group of six critics' reviews averages 6.7 out of 10. Both figures suggest a generally favorable but not unanimous response, with the audience score slightly higher than the critical one.
