Short description

The Secret Life of Pets is an animated comedy about what dogs and other pets get up to once their owners leave for the day. In a Manhattan apartment building, a pampered terrier named Max has his comfortable routine with his owner, Katie, turned upside down when she brings home Duke, a large stray she has taken in. The two dogs take an immediate dislike to each other, and their rivalry over Katie's attention lands them far from home, where they must cooperate to get back before she returns. Their journey brings them into contact with a group of lost pets led by Snowball, a rabbit.

The film was directed by Chris Renaud, its sixth feature in the chronological list of his directed work and the one that followed Despicable Me 2. The screenplay is credited to Ken Daurio, Cinco Paul and Brian Lynch, with Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy producing for Illumination and Universal Pictures. The voice cast includes Louis C.K. as Max, Eric Stonestreet as Duke, Kevin Hart as Snowball, Jenny Slate as Gidget, Ellie Kemper as Katie and Albert Brooks as Tiberius, among 32 credited cast members.

Released in 2016, the film runs 86 minutes. It cost about 75 million dollars and took roughly 875 million dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from around 235,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3/10 from more than 8,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2/10 from 241 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In one scene, a poster for Alfred Hitchcock's classic film "The Birds" can be seen on the wall in the apartment.
  • The song that the white poodle listens to after its owner leaves is the composition “Bounce” by the American band System of a Down.
  • The trailer features the song Downtown.
  • The first animated film featuring voice performances by Louis C.K. and Kevin Hart.
  • In April 2016, actor and comedian Seth Meyers and his dog, Frisbee, starred in a car commercial that also promoted the animated comedy "The Secret Life of Pets".
  • In 2008, in the film starring Matthew McConaughey, “Fool’s Gold,” Kevin Hart played a villain nicknamed Big Bunny (where “bunny” in English means “rabbit”). In “The Secret Life of Pets,” he voiced Snowball, a revenge-driven rabbit who leads an army of abandoned pets.
  • Eric Stonestreet's first animated film role.
  • The fourth animated film featuring Albert Brooks as one of the voice actors. Previously, this actor participated in the voice acting of the feature-length animated films "Finding Nemo" (2003), "The Simpsons Movie" (2007), and "Finding Dory" (2016).
  • In the child’s room, belonging to the owner of the guinea pig, are figurines of Minions from the animated film “Despicable Me” on the nightstand.
  • The third animated film featuring Steve Coogan in the voice cast. He previously voiced characters in the animated films "Despicable Me 2" (2013) and "Minions" (2015).
  • On the bus that Snowball the rabbit is riding in the trailer, hangs an advertising poster for Garth Jennings’ computer-animated musical “Sing,” produced by Illumination Entertainment, which was also released in 2016.
  • At Mr. Starch's party, you can see a corgi dog from the cartoons "Minions" and "Minions vs. Grass".
  • Jenny Slate and Louis C.K. starred together in the television series "Parks and Recreation" (2009-2015).
  • Snowball the rabbit talks about having worked for a magician. In 2008, Pixar Animation Studios released the short film “Presto” about a rabbit and a magician.
