Rahul Seth is a wealthy young Indian-Canadian man who sees himself as thoroughly Western and chafes against his mother's and grandmother's expectations. He is dating Kimberly, a white pop star, to their disapproval. When Kimberly dies suddenly, his mother uses his sister's wedding plans as leverage, insisting he find a suitable Indian girl. Rahul instead hires Sue, an escort he takes to be Hispanic and therefore unburdened by the conventions his family prizes, to pose as his Indian fiancée. Sue, who needs the money and assumes her heart is safe from the typical Indian man, agrees to the arrangement.

Deepa Mehta directed and wrote the screenplay, with David Hamilton producing. It followed her 1997 film Fire and preceded The Republic of Love (2004) and Beeba Boys (2015). Rahul Khanna and Lisa Ray lead the cast, joined by Moushumi Chatterjee, Dina Pathak, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ranjit Chowdhry among 28 credited performers.

The film is a Canadian production that blends romance, comedy, drama and musical numbers. It took in about 2 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 2,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 32 votes, so the two audiences are broadly in line despite the difference in sample size.
