Into the Forest is set in the near future, when a continent-wide power failure brings modern life to a halt. Two sisters, Nell and Eva, live with their father in a house in a remote forest, some forty kilometres from the nearest town. Cut off from the outside world, the family initially tries to stock up and then chooses to stay away from other people. When their father dies, the sisters are left to rely on each other as food runs short, illness spreads and intruders threaten what they have. Patricia Rozema wrote and directed the film, adapting Jean Hegland's novel.
Elliot Page plays Nell and Evan Rachel Wood plays Eva, with Callum Keith Rennie as their father, Robert, and Max Minghella and Michael Eklund in supporting roles. Page also produced alongside Niv Fichman and Aaron L. Gilbert. The Canadian production runs 101 minutes.
Rozema's fifth feature followed Mansfield Park (1999) and Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008) in a filmography that began with When Night Is Falling (1995). Audiences were lukewarm: the film holds a rating of 5.8 on IMDb from more than twenty-one thousand votes and the same figure on TMDB from several hundred. Critics were somewhat more receptive, giving it 6.8 out of 10 across fifty-one reviews.
