Vivacious Lady

Peter Morgan is a young botany professor at a university in a small town, where his domineering father holds considerable influence. Sent to New York to bring his wayward cousin Keith home, Peter instead meets Francey, a nightclub singer, and marries her after a whirlwind courtship. Back in his hometown, he cannot bring himself to tell his conservative father and his ailing mother what he has done, and he arranges for Francey to stay with Keith while he looks for a way to break the news.

George Stevens directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by P.J. Wolfson and Ernest Pagano. It followed A Damsel in Distress in his filmography and came before Gunga Din. Ginger Rogers and James Stewart play Francey and Peter, with James Ellison as Keith, Beulah Bondi and Charles Coburn as Peter's parents, and Frances Mercer as Helen among a credited cast of 46. The film runs 90 minutes.

Released in May 1938 by RKO Radio Pictures, the comedy romance took in about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from roughly 4,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from 71 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 7 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
