Oleanna centers on a meeting between a college professor and one of his students. Carol arrives at John's office to discuss a grade she has received on a paper, and what begins as a conversation about coursework grows increasingly tense. The two disagree about her work and about how the conversation itself is going, and the encounter has consequences that neither of them anticipated.
David Mamet directed and wrote the screenplay, adapting his own stage play. Released in 1994, it followed House of Games and Homicide in his filmography and came before The Spanish Prisoner. William H. Macy plays John and Debra Eisenstadt plays Carol; the two performances carry a film that stays largely confined to a single setting. The production was a collaboration between British and American companies, with Sarah Green and Patricia Wolff producing, and runs 87 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.5 from roughly 3,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from a much smaller group of 61 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 18 reviews places it close to the audience scores. The numbers point to a modest reception rather than a widely embraced one, consistent with a dialogue-driven adaptation of a play whose shifting perspectives resist easy resolution.
