Set in 1965, Losin' It follows four Los Angeles school friends who drive down to Tijuana, Mexico, for a night of partying with a specific goal in mind: losing their virginity before the trip is over. Money is tight, so they bring along a younger hanger-on who has the cash to fund the outing. On the road they pick up Kathy, an older woman heading to Mexico to arrange a quick divorce, and she becomes part of the group. Once across the border, their plans for easy fun run into a series of complications, and getting back home safely turns out to be harder than they expected.
The film was directed by Curtis Hanson, the first of the thirteen features he directed in chronological order, ahead of The Bedroom Window in 1987. Bill L. Norton wrote the screenplay, and Bryan Gindoff and Hannah Hempstead produced. The cast includes Tom Cruise as Woody, Jackie Earle Haley as Dave, John Stockwell as Spider, John P. Navin, Jr. as Wendell, Shelley Long as Kathy, and Henry Darrow as a sheriff, among a credited cast of thirty-seven. It was made for about seven million dollars.
Released in April 1983, the comedy earned roughly one million dollars worldwide, far below its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5 out of 10 from about 5,800 votes, and on TMDB a matching 5 out of 10 from 126 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 11 reviews places it below even those modest audience scores.
