A small Colorado mining town becomes the setting for a horror story rooted in its past. Decades after a collapse kills a group of workers, the old silver mine is reopened, and the digging disturbs something that had been quietly waiting underground. Before long, the people living nearby are being killed off, and the danger seems able to reach them through tunnels running beneath the town itself.
James L. Conway directed the film, his second feature after Hangar 18 the previous year. David O'Malley and Jim Kouf wrote the screenplay, and Charles E. Sellier Jr. produced it for Taft International Pictures. The cast is led by Rebecca Balding, Fred McCarren, Anne-Marie Martin, Jeff Harlan, John Crawford and Med Flory. It runs 95 minutes.
The Boogens was released in September 1981 and is rated 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,600 votes, with a 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 76 votes. Those two audience figures are closely aligned, suggesting a comparable reaction across both groups of viewers. A critics' rating of 4.2 out of 10 from eight reviews sits below the audience scores.
