Chicago Deadline is a crime drama set on the South Side of Chicago, where reporter Ed Adams comes across the body of a young woman named Rosita Jean D'Ur. Before the police can take possession of her diary, he takes it, and inside he finds a list of fifty-four men. Tracking them down, he discovers that most of them are frightened by her death and deny ever knowing her, yet their answers do not add up consistently. As Adams digs deeper into Rosita's life, he is drawn into the city's criminal underworld and into contact with violent figures who would rather he stopped asking questions.
The film was directed by Lewis Allen, released by Paramount in 1949, and runs 86 minutes. It is a crime, drama, mystery and thriller picture. Allen's filmography, in chronological order, includes The Uninvited (1944) and Desert Fury (1947) before this film, and Suddenly (1954), Whirlpool (1959) and Decision at Midnight (1963) afterwards. The screenplay was written by Warren Duff, with Robert Fellows producing.
Alan Ladd plays Ed Adams, and Donna Reed plays Rosita Jean D'Ur. The supporting cast includes June Havoc, Irene Hervey, Arthur Kennedy and Berry Kroeger. On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 15 votes, a small sample that reflects limited recent attention rather than broad consensus.
