Georgetown

Ulrich Mott is an eccentric social climber who marries Elsa Brecht, a well-connected journalist significantly older than himself. Mott uses this strategic union to enter high society and influence United States foreign policy, positioning himself as an essential figure within political and diplomatic circles. While he successfully charms those around him, Elsa's daughter, Amanda, remains suspicious of his motives and dislikes the marriage. The story follows Mott's ascent and the tension with his stepdaughter, eventually leading to a situation where Mott becomes a suspect following the mysterious death of his wife.
