USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage

USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage tells the true story of the American cruiser USS Indianapolis during the final weeks of the Second World War. Under the command of Captain Charles McVay, the ship carries components for the atomic bomb to a military base on the island of Tinian. On the return voyage it is struck by Japanese torpedoes and sinks in the Philippine Sea. Because the mission was secret, no rescue is sent, and the surviving sailors spend days adrift, facing thirst, saltwater poisoning, exhaustion and shark attacks. Only a few hundred men are pulled from the water, and McVay is later brought before a court martial. Nicolas Cage plays McVay, with Tom Sizemore, Matt Lanter, Thomas Jane, Emily Tennant and Craig Tate among the supporting cast.

The film is directed by Mario Van Peebles, whose earlier work includes New Jack City, Posse and Baadasssss!. It followed Red Sky in 2014 and precedes Outlaw Posse in the chronological list of his features. Richard Rionda Del Castro and Cam Cannon wrote the screenplay, and Rionda Del Castro produced with Michael Mendelsohn. The production had a budget of 40 million dollars and returned about 2 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from roughly 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from around 676 votes, both below the critics' rating of 3.4 from 12 reviews.
