Cesar and Rosalie

Rosalie, a divorced artist, has settled into a comfortable life with César, a wealthy and self-assured older businessman. Their relationship is stable and calm until David, a former lover who once left her without explanation and destroyed her marriage, reappears. Rosalie is still drawn to him, and she finds herself torn between two very different men: the confident César and the gentle, free-spirited David. Unable to win her back through ordinary means, César takes an unusual step that brings the three of them together and reshapes the ties between them.

Claude Sautet directed and co-wrote the film with Jean-Loup Dabadie, following The Big Risk and The Dictator's Guns in his filmography; Mado and Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud came later. Romy Schneider plays Rosalie, with Yves Montand as César and Sami Frey as David; Umberto Orsini, Bernard Le Coq and Isabelle Huppert appear in supporting roles. Produced by Michelle de Broca across French, Italian and German companies, the film runs 110 minutes.
