The Woman in Green is a 1945 crime mystery set in London, where a series of killings leaves several young women dead and each body missing a finger. Inspector Gregson of Scotland Yard leans toward a lone madman, but Sherlock Holmes reads the pattern as deliberate and suspects a larger design behind the crimes. His inquiries draw him toward a society of hypnotists and a striking woman named Lydia Marlowe, and toward Professor Moriarty, his longstanding adversary.
Roy William Neill directed and produced the film from a screenplay by Bertram Millhauser. It falls between The House of Fear and Dressed to Kill in Neill's run of Sherlock Holmes pictures, a series he worked on steadily through the mid-1940s. Basil Rathbone plays Holmes and Nigel Bruce plays Dr. Watson, with Hillary Brooke as Lydia Marlowe, Henry Daniell as Moriarty, Paul Cavanagh as Sir George Fenwick and Matthew Boulton as Inspector Gregson. The credited cast numbers 22, and the film runs 68 minutes.
On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 7,600 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from 159 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from eight reviews places critical appraisal somewhat above the broader audience scores on both platforms.
