Animal Treasure Island is a Japanese animated adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island in which most of the characters are animals. A boy named Jim works at an inn, and through a chance encounter he comes into possession of a map showing the way to a treasure amassed by the pirate Flint. Setting out from port with his companion, a rat named Gran, and a small child called Bub aboard a homemade boat, Jim soon runs into pirates, and the search for the island turns into a series of adventures.
Directed by Hiroshi Ikeda, who also worked on the screenplay with Takashi Iijima, the film was made at Toei Animation and runs 78 minutes. Minori Matsushima voices Jim, with Fusako Amachi as Kathy, Asao Koike as Silver, Hitoshi Takagi as Billy Bones, Eiko Masuyama as Gran and Naozumi Yamamoto as Muttsuri. Blending adventure with comedy and aimed at families, it was released in 1971.
Audience responses differ in scale: on IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from 274 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from 27 votes. The larger IMDb sample points to generally favourable viewer sentiment, with the smaller TMDB group somewhat more reserved.
