Working Girl
Short description
Tess McGill is a secretary at a New York investment firm with more ambition than her position allows. When her new boss, Katharine Parker, passes off one of Tess's own ideas as her own, Tess discovers the betrayal. An injury keeps Katharine away from the office, and Tess uses the opportunity to step into her boss's role, presenting herself as a senior executive and pursuing the deal herself. Working alongside merger broker Jack Trainer, she tries to prove she belongs in a world that has never taken her seriously.
Melanie Griffith plays Tess, with Sigourney Weaver as Katharine Parker and Harrison Ford as Jack Trainer. Alec Baldwin, Joan Cusack and Philip Bosco appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 66. Mike Nichols directed the film, the eighth of the eighteen he made, following Heartburn and preceding Biloxi Blues, from a screenplay by Kevin Wade and produced by Douglas Wick.
Released in December 1988, the film is a comedy-drama set in the corporate world of Wall Street-era Manhattan. Made for a budget of 28 million dollars, it earned roughly 103 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 68,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.6 out of 10 from about 1,100 votes. A film critics' rating of 7 out of 10 across 48 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
