Set in rural Connecticut during the summer of 1935, The Other centres on identical twin brothers, Niles and Holland Perry, who live on the family farm while their mother Alexandra recovers elsewhere. Though the boys look alike, their temperaments differ sharply: Holland is reckless and troublesome, while Niles is quieter and more thoughtful. A series of disturbing accidents afflicts the small farming community around them, and Niles begins to suspect his brother's part in them. Their grandmother Ada has taught the boys a mental exercise she calls the game, and she is the one who eventually grasps what has been happening.
Robert Mulligan directed and produced, working from a screenplay by Tom Tryon, adapting his own novel. The film followed Mulligan's Summer of '42 and sits between that and The Man in the Moon among the eight features listed for him. The cast includes Uta Hagen as Ada, Diana Muldaur as Alexandra, Norma Connolly as Aunt Vee, Victor French as Angelini, and real-life twins Chris and Martin Udvarnoky as Niles and Holland.
The film received a critics' rating of 7.1/10 from 12 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 6.8/10 on IMDb from around 7,800 votes and 6.5/10 on TMDB from 163 votes. That pattern suggests reviewers responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
