Anzio

Anzio is a 1968 Italian-American war film set in early 1944, during the Allied campaign in Italy. American forces land on the beaches near the port town of Anzio with little resistance, and the road to Rome appears open. But when war correspondent Dick Ennis and a small reconnaissance party report that the Germans are nowhere in sight, the cautious American commander decides to dig in rather than advance. The delay gives the German commander time to organize a fierce counterattack and strengthen his defenses, turning the landing into a prolonged and costly battle.

The film was directed by Duilio Coletti, with Edward Dmytryk also directing; Anzio sits between Coletti's The Earth Cries Out and The Valdez Horses, and is the seventeenth of Dmytryk's eighteen films, following Alvarez Kelly and preceding Shalako. The screenplay is by H.A.L. Craig, and the film was produced by Dino De Laurentiis. Robert Mitchum leads the cast as Dick Ennis, alongside Peter Falk as Corporal Jack Rabinoff, Robert Ryan as General Carson, Arthur Kennedy as Major General Jack Lesley, Giancarlo Giannini and Earl Holliman.

Released in July 1968, Anzio runs 117 minutes. It holds a rating of 6 out of 10 on IMDb from about 4,300 votes, and 5.6 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. Six critics' reviews give it a rating of 6.1 out of 10, placing it in similar territory to the audience scores.
