Mother's Day

Mother's Day is an ensemble comedy-drama set in the days before the holiday, following several families whose lives intersect. Sandy, recently divorced, is adjusting to her ex-husband's marriage to a much younger woman. Miranda is a television host whose career has taken priority over her private life. Jesse has long been estranged from her mother. Bradley is raising two daughters on his own after losing his wife. Kristin, who was adopted, goes looking for her biological mother. Across these separate threads, the characters deal with misunderstandings and awkward encounters before finding a measure of family harmony.

Garry Marshall directed the film, the eighteenth of the eighteen features he directed and his follow-up to New Year's Eve. The screenplay was written by Anya Kochoff, Tom Hines and Lily Hollander, and the large credited cast of 76 includes Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis, Britt Robertson and Timothy Olyphant.

Released in April 2016, the film had a budget of 25 million US dollars and took about 49 million worldwide, roughly doubling its production cost. On IMDb it holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 42,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 out of 10 from roughly 1,300 votes. A critics' rating of 3.1 out of 10 from 156 reviews is well below the audience scores, indicating that viewers responded more favourably than reviewers did.
