In 1912 Paris, the young journalist Adèle Blanc-Sec pursues her own ends with little regard for danger. She travels to Egypt in search of ancient remains, while back home a pterodactyl hatches from a 136-million-year-old egg at the natural history museum and spreads panic over the city. A professor's unorthodox experiments lie behind the creature's arrival, and a rival and a police inspector complicate matters. The film draws on the comic character created by Jacques Tardi.
Luc Besson directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Tardi, and produced with Virginie Besson-Silla. It is the eleventh of the twenty films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Arthur and the Revenge of Maltazard and Arthur 3: The War of the Two Worlds. Louise Bourgoin plays Adèle, with Mathieu Amalric, Gilles Lellouche, Jean-Paul Rouve, Jacky Nercessian and Philippe Nahon among the thirty-nine credited cast members.
Made for a budget equivalent to 25 million US dollars, the film took about 35 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from about 1,515 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 25 reviews places it close to those audience scores rather than far below them.
