Geronimo: An American Legend

Set in the mid-1880s, the film follows the Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo after his people have been confined to a government reservation. Geronimo refuses to accept the terms imposed on him, and when promises made to the Apaches go unfulfilled, he leaves the reservation with a small band of warriors. Their flight draws thousands of American soldiers into a pursuit that stretches toward Mexico, while the story is seen largely through the eyes of the officers and scouts tasked with tracking him down, among them Lieutenant Charles Gatewood, General George Crook and the scout Al Sieber. The film takes its material from the historical campaign that ended with Geronimo's surrender in 1886.

Walter Hill directed, working from a screenplay by John Milius and Larry Gross, with Hill also producing alongside Neil Canton. Wes Studi plays Geronimo, and the cast includes Jason Patric, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Matt Damon and Rodney A. Grant. It was Hill's fifteenth film as director, arriving between Trespass in 1992 and Wild Bill in 1995, and it was made for a budget of 35 million dollars.

That outlay was not recovered: the worldwide box office came to about 19 million dollars. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.6 from roughly 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 from 312 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 21 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
