Edward Dmytryk directed Cornered, a 1945 American thriller made by RKO Radio Pictures. The story follows Laurence Gerard, a Canadian airman demobilized after the Second World War, who returns to France to learn who ordered the killing of a group of Resistance fighters that included his young wife. His search points to Marcel Jarnac, a Vichy collaborator also declared dead. Gerard refuses to accept that and traces the man to Buenos Aires, where he finds that Nazi networks have hardly vanished. Among the people he encounters there are Jarnac's widow and several secretive figures who insist the man he seeks is gone.
Dick Powell plays Gerard, heading a credited cast of twenty-two that includes Walter Slezak, Micheline Cheirel, Nina Vale, Morris Carnovsky and Edgar Barrier. The screenplay was written by John Paxton and Ben Hecht, and Adrian Scott produced. The film runs 102 minutes.
Cornered was Dmytryk's second feature as director in chronological order, arriving between Captive Wild Woman and Back to Bataan. Ratings place it as a modestly regarded entry in his filmography: it holds 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 2,800 votes and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 45 votes, a gap that reflects the limited sampling behind the second figure more than any sharp division of opinion.
