Short description
Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is an animated family comedy set in a world where samurai are drawn from the ranks of cats. Hank, a dog with dreams of becoming a samurai, arrives in a cat town where dogs are not welcome and finds himself its only hope. A ruthless villain plans to wipe the village off the map, and the townsfolk need someone to defend them. With guidance from a reluctant mentor, a grumpy cat warrior, Hank trains in the ways of the samurai and must rally the villagers, who are not naturally well disposed toward dogs, to face the threat.
The film is directed by Rob Minkoff, Chris Bailey and Mark Koetsier, from a screenplay by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper. Minkoff's earlier directing credits include The Lion King, the two Stuart Little films, The Haunted Mansion, The Forbidden Kingdom, Flypaper and Mr. Peabody & Sherman. The voice cast is led by Michael Cera as Hank, Samuel L. Jackson as Jimbo, Ricky Gervais as Ika Chu, Kylie Kuioka as Emiko, Mel Brooks as the Shogun and George Takei as Ohga, with 43 credited cast members and 179 credited crew.
Released in July 2022, the film runs 94 minutes and was made on a budget of about 45 million US dollars, against a worldwide box office of roughly 43 million. It has a rating of 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB from 342 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.1 out of 10 from 61 reviews, with audiences scoring it higher than critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- Unlike most animated films, where actors voice their characters individually, the initial idea here was for Michael Cera and Samuel L. Jackson to record their lines in each other's presence, to make their characters' communication sound more natural. The actors managed to record only one session before the coronavirus pandemic began, and they had to finish recording everything else from home. The dialogue was originally recorded in 2015-2016, when the film was still expected to be released in 2017, but the script was rewritten, work on the film was restarted in 2019, and almost all the lines had to be re-recorded.
