Grass Roots is a television crime drama about Will Lee, an ambitious lawyer in Georgia who is campaigning for a seat in the United States Senate. A local judge orders him to take on the defence of a young man charged with murder, forcing him to balance the demands of his political race with a serious criminal trial. At the same time, a white-supremacist organisation hires a killer to target him. The film continues the story of the Lee family from the 1983 miniseries Chiefs.
Jerry London directed the film, which sits between Shogun and Beauty in the list of the four features and television films he directed in the facts. Corbin Bernsen plays Will Lee, with Mel Harris as Kate Rule, Katherine Helmond as Emma Carr, Raymond Burr as Judge Boggs, Rod Taylor as Gen. Willoughby and John Glover as Harold Perkerson, also known as Jason Ross. Martin Manulis produced.
Grass Roots runs 155 minutes and was first broadcast on 24 February 1992. It is a production of Spelling Entertainment, Team Cherokee Productions and J.B.S. Productions, and it belongs to the crime, drama and thriller genres. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 93 votes, indicating a modest but positive response from the small number of users who have rated it.
