Paterson
Short description
Paterson is a bus driver in the New Jersey city that shares his name. He follows the same route each day, listening to fragments of conversation from the passengers behind him, and during breaks he sits in a park and writes poems in a notebook he keeps to himself. At home, his wife Laura moves in the opposite direction, filling their house with new enthusiasms and projects, from baking to learning the electric guitar, while he quietly supports each one. Their life together, and the small routines of the city around them, unfold over the course of a single week, with the poems serving as Paterson's way of recording how he sees the world. Jim Jarmusch wrote and directed the film, the twelfth of the fourteen features in his filmography in chronological order, following Only Lovers Left Alive and preceding The Dead Don't Die.
Adam Driver plays Paterson and Golshifteh Farahani plays Laura. The cast also includes Rizwan Manji, Barry Shabaka Henley and William Jackson Harper, and the dog Marvin is played by Nellie. The production, made across Germany, the United States and France, cost five million dollars and returned ten million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from around ninety-five thousand votes, and on TMDB a 7.1 from just over two thousand. The critics' score of 8.5 from 264 reviews is noticeably higher than those audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- The conversation between the two construction workers on the bus is a real conversation that director Jim Jarmusch once overheard in a bar.
- To prepare for the role, Adam Driver attended bus driver school. The producers were going to arrange driving lessons, but Adam proactively enrolled in a school on his own initiative. He trained for a total of three months in Queens, New York, and passed his exam a week before filming started.
- The poems written by the main character belong to Ron Padgett – one of Jim Jarmusch's favorite contemporary poets. Padgett agreed to write several poems specifically for the film and gave permission to use some of his earlier works.
- "Paterson" is the second collaboration between Jim Jarmusch and actor Masatoshi Nagase after "Mystery Train." The difference between the films is 27 years.

- The man rapping in the laundromat is Method Man, a member of Wu-Tang Clan. Another member of the group, RZA, appeared in Jarmusch's "Ghost Dog" and wrote the soundtrack for the film. RZA and GZA also appeared in Jarmusch's "Coffee and Cigarettes," a collection of short films.
- The poems in the film were written by Ron Padgett, one of director Jim Jarmusch’s favorite contemporary poets. Padgett agreed to write several poems specifically for the film, and also gave his consent for the use of some poems he had already written.
- Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman had previously starred together in Wes Anderson’s "Moonrise Kingdom." That project was their first feature film.
