Jonathan Tibbs, a well-mannered English gunsmith, heads to the American West in the 1880s to find new customers for his family's firearms business. An encounter with a Native American party on the way to the town of Fractured Jaw leaves him unharmed, and word of his supposed speed with a concealed wrist-mounted pistol spreads. Mistaken for a deadly marksman, he is offered the post of sheriff in a settlement torn between rival factions. Rather than shooting his way out, he tries to bring order through negotiation, helped by a blood-brother bond with a local tribe, while courting Kate, the saloon owner.
The film is a British comedy western directed by Raoul Walsh, working from a screenplay by Howard Dimsdale, and produced by Daniel M. Angel. It was the last of the 23 features Walsh directed in the chronological record given here, following The King and Four Queens. Kenneth More plays Jonathan, with Jayne Mansfield as Kate, and Henry Hull, Bruce Cabot, Robert Morley and William Campbell among the credited cast of 25. Released in October 1958 and running 103 minutes, it drew modest audience scores: 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 1,600 votes, and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample.
