House II: The Second Story
Short description
Jesse McLaughlin inherits an old family mansion and moves in with his girlfriend and a friend. While exploring the house, he becomes curious about his ancestry and traces his family line back to his great-great-grandfather, a western outlaw who is said to have stolen a crystal skull with magical powers and been buried with it. When Jesse opens the grave, he finds his ancestor still alive, and the skull draws the attention of otherworldly creatures and triggers strange events in the house. The film mixes comedy with fantasy and horror.
House II: The Second Story was released in 1987 and marks the directorial debut of Ethan Wiley, who also wrote the screenplay. Wiley went on to direct Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror in 1998. The cast includes Arye Gross as Jesse, Jonathan Stark as Charlie, Royal Dano as Gramps, Bill Maher as John, John Ratzenberger as Bill and Jayne Modean as Rochelle. Sean S. Cunningham produced.
Made for a budget of 3 million dollars, the film took in about 8 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from roughly 13,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.6 from around 284 votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 20 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Devin DeVasquez, who played the virgin, a heavy prop skull was accidentally dropped on her head during the filming of her sacrifice scene, resulting in a concussion. The actress was immediately taken to the hospital, but the producers were very worried she might sue them.
- As part of the promotional campaign, props such as crystal skull-shaped nightlights were sent to some cinemas in advance.
- It is considered a sequel, but the film's plot has no connection to the plot of Steve Miner's 1985 original film.
- Ethan Wiley was given only two weeks to write the screenplay.
