Short description
A thirteen-year-old boy named Josh feels frustrated that he is treated like a child and that girls ignore him. At a carnival, he finds an old machine that grants a wish for a coin, and he asks to be grown up. The next morning he discovers he has an adult body, while inside he remains the same boy. He must now navigate a world of work, money and romance with no experience to guide him, and his search for a place in it eventually leads him into the toy industry.
Big was released in 1988 and was the second film directed by Penny Marshall, following Jumpin' Jack Flash two years earlier. Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg wrote the screenplay, and James L. Brooks and Robert Greenhut produced it. Tom Hanks plays Josh, with Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia, John Heard, Jared Rushton and Jon Lovitz among the cast.
Made for about 18 million dollars, the film took roughly 152 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences rate it 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb and 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB, while the film critics' rating stands at 8 out of 10, notably higher than the viewer scores.
