In thirteenth-century Berzano, a group of knights known as the Templars were put to death for practicing black magic and human sacrifice in pursuit of eternal life. Centuries later, their blind, undead bodies rise from their graves and prey on travellers who stray into the ruins where they were buried. The story follows Betty, who joins her friend Virginia and Virginia's companion Roger on a train journey; after an argument, Virginia leaves the train and spends the night in a deserted village near the old abbey, where the resurrected Templars begin to stir.
Amando de Ossorio wrote and directed this Spanish-Portuguese horror film, the first entry in his four-part series about the blind dead, which continued with The Blind Dead Ride Again, The Blind Dead Attack and Night of the Seagulls. Lone Fleming leads the cast as Betty, alongside María Elena Arpón as Virginia, César Burner as Roger, José Thelman, Rufino Inglés and Simón Arriaga.
Released in 1972 and running 101 minutes, the film holds a 6.1 rating on IMDb from around 7,000 votes and a 6.2 on TMDB from roughly 174 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.1 from 14 reviews. Those figures place it as a modestly received genre title with a steady following rather than a broadly acclaimed one.
