Short description
Set in Baroque France, a scheming widow and her lover make a bet regarding the corruption of a recently married woman. The lover, Valmont, bets that he can seduce her, even though she is an honorable woman. If he wins, he can have his lover to do as he will. However, in the process of seducing the married woman, Valmont falls in love.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film’s release in some countries (for example, in the UK) was deliberately delayed so that some time would pass after the release of Steven Frears’ drama “Dangerous Liaisons” (1988). According to the screenwriter of “Dangerous Liaisons,” Christopher Hampton, Miloš Forman (1932-2018) attended several performances of “Dangerous Liaisons” in London and eventually decided to film his own cinematic adaptation of the novel (1782) by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (1741-1803). Due to the competition, Lorimar Films ordered that “Dangerous Liaisons” be quickly developed in order to release the film before “Valmont.” This tactic proved successful, and “Dangerous Liaisons” was relatively successful at the box office and received favorable reviews from critics, while “Valmont” received mixed critical reviews and failed at the box office.
- Fairuz Balk was 14 years old during filming. A stunt double was used for the scenes with nudity.
