The film's plot is based on a Buddhist parable about an old woman who forbade her daughter-in-law from visiting the temple, blocking her path with a demon mask. As punishment, Buddha made the mask stick to the old woman's face.
The demon mask in the film inspired William Friedkin, who used its features when creating the female demon in 'The Exorcist' (1973).
