Nothing Sacred

Nothing Sacred follows Hazel Flagg, a young woman in a small Vermont town whose doctor tells her she has a fatal case of radium poisoning, then admits he was mistaken. She decides to make the most of the diagnosis anyway. Wally Cook, a New York newspaper reporter with a tarnished reputation, learns of her case and brings her to the city, where he presents her to readers as a dying heroine. The story grows beyond anything he intended, and the deception becomes difficult to control.

William A. Wellman directed the film, the seventh of the sixteen features he made, between A Star Is Born and Beau Geste. Ben Hecht wrote the screenplay, and David O. Selznick produced it for Selznick International Pictures on a budget of two million dollars. Carole Lombard plays Hazel, Fredric March plays Wally Cook, and Charles Winninger, Walter Connolly, Sig Ruman and Frank Fay appear in supporting roles. The credited cast runs to twenty-nine names.

The film runs seventy-seven minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around 7,700 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.3 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 8.9 from twelve reviews places it noticeably higher than either audience score.
