Short description

Tales from Earthsea is an animated fantasy adventure set in a world where the balance of nature is collapsing. Crops are failing and dragons, creatures normally confined to the far western reaches, have begun appearing in the lands of men. The archmage Sparrowhawk, known in some versions as Ged, sets out to discover what is causing this disruption. On his journey he meets Arren, a young prince from Enlad who is troubled and on the run. The two travel together toward the capital, where they take shelter with Tenar, a former priestess, and encounter a mysterious girl named Therru. Their search brings them up against a powerful force that threatens the world itself.

The film was directed by Goro Miyazaki, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Keiko Niwa, and it was produced by Toshio Suzuki and Tomohiko Ishii for Studio Ghibli. It was the first film Goro Miyazaki directed, followed by From Up on Poppy Hill and Earwig and the Witch. The Japanese voice cast includes Junichi Okada as Arren, Aoi Teshima as Therru, Bunta Sugawara as Haitaka, Yuko Tanaka as Cob, Teruyuki Kagawa as Hare and Jun Fubuki as Tenar. Made on a budget of about 22 million dollars, it took roughly 69 million dollars worldwide.

Audience responses have been moderate. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 48,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 41 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Due to licensing issues (the rights to adapt Ursula K. Le Guin's books belonged to the Sci-Fi Channel, which released the miniseries "Legends of Earthsea" in 2004), the film could not be released in the US before 2009, when the license expired.
