The Incredible Journey follows a bull terrier, a Labrador retriever and a Siamese cat who live with a Canadian family. When the family travels to Europe for several months, the three animals are left in the care of a friend, John Longridge, at his farm far from their home. After Longridge goes away for a few days, the pets set out on their own, hoping to find their way back. Their route crosses hundreds of kilometres of Canadian wilderness, and having lived as household animals, they must cope with hunger and danger along the way.
The film was released in 1963 by Walt Disney Productions, running 80 minutes. It was directed by Fletcher Markle from a screenplay by James Algar, with Walt Disney producing, and it belongs to that stretch of the studio's live-action animal adventures. Émile Genest plays John Longridge, with John Drainie and Sandra Scott as Professor and Mrs. Hunter, and Jan Rubeš, Tommy Tweed and Syme Jago in supporting roles.
Its standing has held up modestly over the decades. On IMDb it rates 7 out of 10 across roughly 5,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller pool of about 123 ratings. The critics' score of 7.3 from nine reviews is close to the audience figures, suggesting a film that has neither been oversold nor dismissed by those who have seen it.
