During the American Civil War, a group of Union prisoners escape captivity in a balloon and are carried far off course by a storm. They come ashore on an uncharted island in the South Pacific, where oversized plants and prehistoric creatures make survival difficult, and they must rely on their skills and each other to endure. An unseen benefactor repeatedly comes to their aid, and their situation grows more perilous when a pirate ship threatens the island. The film is a loose adaptation of Jules Verne's novel and features Captain Nemo, connecting it to his earlier story.
Cy Endfield directed the film, which sits between Hell Drivers (1957) and Zulu (1964) in his filmography. John Prebble, Crane Wilbur and Daniel B. Ullman wrote the screenplay, and Charles H. Schneer produced. The cast includes Michael Craig as Cyrus Harding, Joan Greenwood as Lady Mary Fairchild, Michael Callan as Herbert Brown, Gary Merrill as Gideon Spilitt, Herbert Lom as Captain Nemo, and Beth Rogan as Elena Fairchild. Made for about two million dollars, it runs 101 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from roughly 9,600 votes, and on TMDB it has a 6.6 from 213 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 17 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broadly similar assessments from both groups.
