Return of the Fly

Fifteen years after his father's matter-transmission experiments ended in disaster, Philippe Delambre decides to pick up the research where his father left off. Together with his uncle François, he builds a working transmitter, but a scheming assistant has his own plans for the invention. The result is that Philippe emerges from the machine fused with a fly, leaving him trapped between two forms and driven to seek out those who wronged him.

Edward Bernds directed and wrote the screenplay, with Bernard Glasser producing for 20th Century Fox and Associated Producers. Vincent Price returns as François Delambre, the role he had played in the earlier film about the Delambre family, alongside Brett Halsey as Philippe, John Sutton as Inspector Beecham, David Frankham as the treacherous assistant Ronald Holmes, Dan Seymour and Danielle De Metz. The film runs eighty minutes and followed Bernds's 1948 short Flat Feat, placing it early in a directing career that would continue for years afterward.

On IMDb, audiences rate the film 6.1 out of 10 from 272 votes, while critics are less enthusiastic, giving it 4.9 out of 10 across 14 reviews — a gap suggesting the film plays better as a genre entertainment than as a serious piece of filmmaking. Made as a follow-up to the earlier adaptation of the same source material, it belongs to the wave of creature features that filled American cinemas in the late 1950s.
