Anastasia

Set in Paris in the 1920s, this drama follows a group of White Russian exiles who scheme to claim the fortune of the last tsar. Their plan depends on passing off a suitable young woman as the Grand Duchess Anastasia, the tsar's daughter, who is rumoured to have survived the execution of her family. General Bounine and his associates find a troubled, destitute woman named Anna Koreff and train her to play the part, presenting her to the surviving members of the imperial family. As the deception takes shape, Bounine begins to wonder whether she might genuinely be Anastasia, and the Dowager Empress must ultimately judge her claim.

Anatole Litvak directed the film, which came after a run of work including Sorry, Wrong Number and The Snake Pit and before The Night of the Generals. Arthur Laurents wrote the screenplay, and Buddy Adler produced it for 20th Century Fox on a budget of four million dollars. Ingrid Bergman plays Anna opposite Yul Brynner as Bounine, with Helen Hayes as the Dowager Empress, Akim Tamiroff, Martita Hunt and Felix Aylmer in supporting roles.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from a much smaller voter base. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 places it broadly in line with the audience response. The worldwide box office matched its production budget.
