Short description
F9 continues the story of Dominic Toretto, who has settled into a quiet life with Letty and their son Brian. That calm is disrupted by a new threat tied to Dom's past, forcing him to reunite his crew to stop a global plot. The central conflict pits the team against Jakob, a highly capable assassin and driver who is also Dom's estranged brother. Vin Diesel leads the cast as Dom, with Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel and John Cena among the credited performers, part of a large ensemble supported by a substantial crew.
Justin Lin directed and co-wrote the film with Daniel Casey, returning to the series after Star Trek Beyond. Lin had previously directed several earlier entries, beginning with The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift in 2006 and continuing through Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6. The film was produced by Clayton Townsend, Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, and made on a reported budget of 200 million US dollars. It earned about 726 million US dollars worldwide, a strong commercial result. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 from around 179,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 7 from roughly 7,860 votes. A critics' rating stands at 5.7 from 317 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Red Digital Cinema paid for product placement of its Hydrogen One smartphone in the film, however, in November 2019, after filming was completed but several months before the film's release, due to poor sales, they chose to exit the business altogether. Covid restrictions delayed the film's release, which finally occurred in mid-2021, more than a year after that decision was made.
- The enormous armored truck shown during the final chase in Tbilisi was called "Armored Carrier." It was over 4 meters tall, weighed 26 tons, and took 4 months to build.
- On November 1, 2017, Tyrese Gibson announced that he would not be part of the film's cast if Dwayne Johnson were to appear, with whom he has a strained relationship. When Johnson publicly stated he would not be filming in the movie, the question of Gibson's participation was resolved.
