Bend of the River

Set in the 1850s, Bend of the River follows Glyn McLyntock, a man with a troubled past who signs on as a guide for a wagon train of settlers traveling from Missouri to the Oregon Territory. On the journey he rescues Emerson Cole from a lynching, and the two become friends. Reaching Portland, the settlers buy supplies for the winter from a local merchant who promises to send them on, but the delivery never arrives, and Glyn and the wagon master return to find a town transformed by gold fever.

Anthony Mann directed the film, the ninth of the twenty he made in chronological order, following The Furies and preceding The Naked Spur. Borden Chase wrote the screenplay, Aaron Rosenberg produced, and James Stewart stars as Glyn, with Arthur Kennedy as Cole, Julie Adams as Laura Baile, Rock Hudson as Trey Wilson, Jay C. Flippen as Jeremy Baile and Lori Nelson as Marjie Baile, among a credited cast of forty-two. Universal International Pictures released the Western adventure in January 1952.

The film runs 91 minutes and took about 3 million dollars worldwide at the box office. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 224 votes.
